Aside from being an act of intellectual theft, plagiarism can bring consequences upon the plagiarizer that they may not see. While the mere theft can bring a person to court for their unethical bahavior, what a plagiarizer may not know is they are hurting themselves just as much as they are hurting the original writer. By failing to work at finding their information, or by failing to translate the information into their own words, they are missing the opportunity to truly learn. Here they miss out on teaching themselves a piece of (possibly) vitally important information. A missed opportunity and poor ethics are not the only issues brought about by plagiarism... In plagiarizing (literary theft) we lose credibility. People can't trust us anymore just as it is impossible to trust a habitual liar. So as a liar and an unethical thief, plagiarizers are taken to court... The fourth reason. Unethical lying and theft often get people taken to court and though they are the same thing, these traits the root of plagiarism. So as a result of these three things there is punishment. You can be sued for infringement or even misuse of intellectual property.
